It is understandable why California attracts a lot of people. It is warm and sunny most part of the year, Los Angeles is full of movie stars, and rollerblading babes can be found all over the place in Venice Beach. Even if it is exaggerated, this part of the California mystique is real and not very hard to find.

But California has other things too, that are not scripted, sanitized, and broadcast to the mesmerized masses of the world. The glitter and glamour are only the surface of an incredibly diverse state that would be a productive and powerful nation in the event of ever getting separated from the Union. California has it all: redwood forests, an incredibly verdant Central Valley, the Sierra Nevada, deserts, a lot of well-known cities, and hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline.

Despite the crime, pollution, traffic, and earthquakes, which have made California famous as well, people here are still the golden children of the United States, America's spoiled rich kid that is either loved or loathed by everyone. (In Oregon, for example, they sell lots of license-plate rims stating I hate California.) To be perfectly sincere, people here dont really care. Californians are aware of the fact that they live in one of the most interesting places in the world, and they're proud of their state. Nobody can guarantee you that you'll meet Arnold Schwarzenegger or learn how to surf here, but with a little time, a little money, and an adventurous spirit, you will be guided by us and offered one of the most fulfilling vacations of your life. The four of us do nothing but travel, but we chose to live in California because this place has so much to offer.

Driving the northern California coastal road from the Oregon border southwards to San Francisco makes for a majestically scenic summer road trip. If you love stunning beauty, the California coast route will give you the best of TWO worlds...both panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean AND intimate, cathedral-like groves of skyscraper-high California redwoods.

You'll start your California coast roadtrip in northern California's Redwoods National Park. Redwoods National Park guards some of California's last remaining old growth redwood trees, while at the same time providing the public with opportunities to view and enjoy them. At Redwoods National Park, you may enjoy the informational exhibits in one of 5 visitors centers; ough it with some tent camping...or take it easy in your RV; be inspired by a naturalist's talk at a campfire program or join a ranger-led nature walk; or simply enjoy picnicking under the redwoods or by the beach.

Heading southwards along US Highway 101, you'll drive for awhile along the coast until you pass thebeachside city of Eureka, CA, where the route heads inland. If you stop in the small town of Scotia, California, you'll be able to take a tour at the Pacific Lumber Company's sawmill. There, you'll see whole logs turned rapidly into finished wood products...guided by a computerized system which makes the most from each log.

Continuing southwards along US 101, you'll soon reach The Avenue of the Giants scenic drive (about 30 miles south of Eureka.) This road offers you miles of stunning views of the California redwoods. At points, these gentle giants enshroud the road so that light never touches the pavement!

In the midst of the Avenue of the Giants, you'll want to make a stop at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. There, you may set up camp for the night...in a spot where every breath brings you the aroma of the redwoods' fresh scent! You'll find miles of hiking trails through the trees, spots for fishing...and you can even get a little swimming done in the Eel River. Or, if you only have time for a quick stay at Humboldt Redwoods State Park, you can take a quick view of the Visitors Center's engaging exhibits, or stroll along a short path through a gorgeous old grove.

Heading south along the Avenue of the Giants, you'll come to an interesting site that just screams ourist kitsch...and that's the One-Log House. Can you believe that these giant redwoods are large anough to carve out an RV-sized home on their insides? They are!

Still southwards, you'll reach Leggett, California...where you'll find the Chandler Drive-through Tree. You may drive through a unnel in the base of this giant redwood...while the tree towers above you, oblivious to the tourists gawking below!

At Leggett, US Highway 101 continues inland towards California's Napa Valley Wine Country. To enjoy a coastal drive, you should catch California Highway 1 at this point, and take a short jaunt west to the Pacific Ocean. As you head southwards towards San Francisco, you'll drive for miles and miles on a 2-lane, bluff-hugging road with terrific views of the rocky shoreline below.

You might wish to stop at the quaint little village of Mendocino. There, you'll find an artist's colony, many bed and breakfast inns just oozing with charm, and the opportunity for touring and sports.

Further south still, you'll come to Bodega Bay. Not only is Bodega Bay blessed with natural beauty, but you'll also enjoy touring The Birds filming sites. The Alfred Hitchcock nail-biter was filmed both at Bodega Bay and its inland sister town, Bodega, California. You'll see The Birds filming locations in both of these little hamlets.

Most of the northern California coastline is rocky. When you head south into the Point Reyes National Seashore, you'll find a large and sandy beach awaiting you. Time to enjoy a swim!

As you make your final approach into San Francisco, California Highway 1 merges back into US 101 again. You'll pass the scenic little town of Sausalito, California, where you may view the Muir Woods National Monument (for another glimpse of fabulous redwoods) or the San Francisco Bay Model visitor's center (where you'll learn about the tides of the bay, and how they affect humans, plants and animals.)

You're on San Francisco's doorstep now! You'll know you've arrived when you see that graceful and majestic marvel of engineering looming before you...the Golden Gate Bridge. It's simply thrilling to cross the Golden Gate and see an expansive vista of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay and the city itself all spread before you simultaneously!

You northern California coastal road trip is now completed. As you sadly leave it behind, you also begin to cheer. It's time to view all the exciting attractions that San Francisco has to offer!

The land for this world-famous Balboa Park was set aside in 1868. In 1910 a contest named the developing park in honor of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. Dogs are allowed on trails throughout the 1400-acre park and there are also a pair of 24-hour dog parks: a large grassy area on Balboa Drive at El Prado, on the south side of Cabrillo Bridge, and at Morley Field on the east side of the park northwest of the tennis courts. Grape Street Park is designated as a dog-off-leash area during the following times: Monday-Friday, 7:30-10:00 a.m. and 4:00-9:00 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 4:00-9:00 p.m.

Just northeast of San Diego you can hike with your dog on the trails of Mission Trails Regional Park. Dating back as far as 8,000 B.C., this was the land of the the mighty Kumeyaay Nation with 18 communities spanning California and Mexico, 12 in San Diego County alone. Established only in 1974 on the site of Old Mission Dam, the parks nearly 6,000 natural acres recalls the land at the time of the first Spanish settlement in San Diego Bay in 1542.

Dogs are welcome on the more than 40 miles of hard-packed trails here across open chaparral and sage scrub. For short openers at Mission Trails consider the Oak Grove Loop and Visitor Center Loop at the Visitor and Interpretive Center. Other easy canine hikes include the Grassland Loop in East Fortuna and the Father Junipero Serra Trail that visits all the habitats of the park including wetlands feeding Mission Canyon and oak woodlands.

The star canine hike at Mission Trails is Cowles Mountain where several trails lead to the highest point in San Diego - 1,591 feet. The 360-degree views can be had with round trips ranging from three to five miles on the trail. A short detour to the northwest leads to 1379-foot Pyles Peak.

Mission Trails Regional Park is located off Mission Gorge Road at the corners of Father Junipero Serra Trail and Echo Dell Road.

California is the place to be whether you are looking for a new home and permanent residence or are just looking for a great place to have a relaxing and event filled vacation. If you like the great outdoors and large trees then the North Coastal region is the place for you. In this area you will find the tallest trees in the world known as the Redwoods. There aren't many places in the world where you can experience trees that grow to a height of 300 feet, this is one of them.

If you'd like to take a long scenic drive after seeing the Redwoods then take Highway 1, better known as the Pacific Coast Highway down to San Francisco. Most of this stretch of the famous highway is a two lane road running right along the rocky coast. While it offers beautiful scenery, don't expect to make good time as it is a winding narrow road not for the faint of heart.

Before you reach San Francisco you can veer off Highway 1 and take a drive through Napa Valley and visit some of the most famous wine country in the world. Some of San Francisco's most famous landmarks include the Transamerica Pyramid, Alcatraz Island, The Golden Gate Bridge and of course, Fisherman's Warf.

San Francisco is also famous for it's several months long episodes of fog where it can be beautiful and clear outside the bay area and the temperature can drop by 20 to 30 degrees upon entering the city and the bay.

Then there is southern California featuring the big city life of Los Angeles, the glamor of Hollywood and the mild climate of San Diego in the most southern part of the state. San Diego sits on the coast bordering Mexico and is home to more than 1.3 million people. It boasts a comfortable marine climate with an average annual temperature of around 65 degrees. Disney Theme Parks just get better and better, have you ever wanted to fly above the clouds and see what it would be like to be a bird? Then this new attraction from Disney is for you.

You can find it in The Land in Epcot, so remember to collect your park map when you enter the park, get there early and avoid the long queues. You are seated in the most advanced technology available to fly you to the experience of a lifetime. Soarin above California on your very own hand glider.

This ride is very popular and fast passes are avaialble, so take advantage or be prepared to wait your turn as people flock to experience Disneys newest attraction yet. Each Glider as three rows of seats, just hope and pray you get on row one to give you the best ride by far. You are lifted 40 ft in the air over and 80ft projection screen that wraps around you.

The effects of wind and the glider tilting gives the feel of you actually flying in the air. At certain points througout the flight, scents are released to make the experience even more realistic. Im not going to give away the places, but whrn you ride it, you will know what I mean.

The ride was created by one of Disneys imagineers, Mark Summer, who developed the ride by experimenting with his old erector set. There are two theatres used for this experience and both holding 87 guests, so 174 guests are flying high in the sky all at the same time.

There are rumours that at the end of Disneys 18 month Happiest Celebration on Earth, the movie used will be replaced with a special version to see the close of the celebration. So that will be something not to be missed.

There is no doubt that this ride is one of their most popular rides, and the queues that form quickly confirm this. Disney have renovated all the food courts in the entrance of The Land, to give you a feel of an airport food court. This is an ingenious way of Disneys Imagineers setting the mood for the ride. Disney also have a child swap facility for this ride, so if you have toddlers that dont quite meet the height requirements, the rest of the family can still all ride without anyone missing out.

Im sure you will enjoy the ride as much as we did. Its a ride not to be missed! Weve just returned from Orlando and had to visit this attraction yet again! All out family went on this and loved the experience just as much as we did on our first flight!

In the northern regions of San Diego County in Southern California is a lovely little seaside village called Carlsbad. Its a great place for a mini vacation for the family.

If youre kids are still preteen or younger, Legoland stands out as the big attraction. Though primary colors are emblazoned everywhere, this has to be one of the most pleasant theme parks for parents to take their kids. Short lines, a relaxed atmosphere, nice landscaping, a healthy caf, and the fact that you can do most of it in a day are its best aspects.

Then theres the beach. Carlsbad State Beach is off of Carlsbad Blvd., just a short walk from the village center. Theres plenty of sand to enjoy the seashore experience. A boardwalk lines the back of the beach for those sunset strolls. Just take the Tamarack Ave. exit off the I-5 and go west for about a mile.

A little further to the south is South Carlsbad State Beach. There is a campground stretching along the top of the bluff overlooking the ocean with a staircase down to the beach. For more info on the beaches, call 800-444-7275.

If youre in Carlsbad in the springtime, the Flower Fields should not be missed. From March to about the middle of May, you can walk through the 50 acres of colorfully carpeted fields yourself or take a guided tour. The fields are located at 5704 Paseo de Norte. Call 706-431-0352.

Not too far from Legoland and the flower fields is the Museum of Making Music at 5790 Armada Drive. Saunter through rooms exhibiting the musical history displays and enjoy musical samples with pushbutton activation (the kids love this). Learn about musical styles and vintage instruments.

At the end of the exhibit is a room full of instruments, which you can play yourself (with headphones on). Theres an age limit though, so the youngest children arent allowed in this room. Maybe mom and dad can take turns! Call 760-438-5996.

There is a fabulous restaurant just down the street at 5801 Armada Drive, called the Karl Strauss Brewery Restaurant. It has delicious food and a nice outdoor eating porch with a view.

Carlsbad Village is the section, which has a tree lined small town atmosphere. Youll find antique stores, specialty shops and restaurants along State Street near Grand Ave. and Carlsbad Village Drive.

Carlsbad is located about 35 miles north of San Diego. Take the Carlsbad Village Ave. exit and go west. For Legoland, the Flower Fields and Museum of Making Music, take the Palomar Avenue Road exit.

If youd rather get there the fun, relaxing and scenic way, take the train! The Coaster runs from Oceanside in the north to San Diego in the south and has a station at 2775 State Street. Theres 24 hour free parking in case youre staying in Carlsbad and want to take a day trip by train down to San Diego or one of the beach towns in between. Call 800-COASTER.

So, between relaxing at the beach, downtown strolling and dining, flower gazing, exploring musical history, or playing at Legoland, youll probably need more than just a day in Carlsbad! When the sky of Los Angeles started getting covered with the clouds of automotive pollutants, a regulation was passed that limited pollutant emissions from every automobile. Because of this effective regulation, the air of Los Angeles is much cleaner now. This decision has not only cleaned the atmosphere of Los Angeles but has also set example for rest of United States. Example setting is not only the habit but is also in the culture of California.

Needless to say, the most characteristic part of California is its Film industry. Not only is it the home to Hollywood, it is the home of many movie and music stars as well. The Pacific Coast Highway or Route 101, twists and turns throughout its length with no regular patterns. On these challenging curves and mountains many hot chase movie scenes have been filmed. A part of the state is placed on the plate that moves northward, with large part of Pacific Ocean on it and the rest of the portion is placed on the plate which is continental United States.

The thought of geological plates moving and causing earthquakes terrifies most of us, but not all fault movement is violent and destructive. Near the city of Hollister in central California, the Calaveras Fault creeps at an average rate of 5-6 mm a year and experiences 20,000 earthquakes a year, most of which are too small for the inhabitants to notice. That the Big One will come and Los Angeles and California will break off and fall into the ocean is myth. Yes, the two plates that meet here are moving, but they are sliding past each other, not riding up on each other (transverse not converging boundaries; usgs.gov and extremescience.com) So instead of part of California falling into the ocean, it may end up adjoining Alaska - given a billion years or two! Meanwhile, whether you love to surf, sunbathe, ski or shop, the pleasures of California await you.

In southern California October through March is the season for The Santa Ana Winds. Hot and dusty, the Santa Anas carry a large number of positive ions and have also been called 'ill winds'. Studies show that positive ion winds can inflame asthma and worsen other respiratory problems, cause body pains, headaches, dizziness, nausia and fatigue. They have also been known to cause depression, anxiety, irritation, exhaustion and insecurity.

The winds are formed when the inland Mojave and Sonoran Deserts are cold. Known as downslope winds, air is drawn through the mountains down into the Los Angeles Basin, Orange County and northern San Diego County. These dusty winds reach speeds of up to 70 mph, which qualifies as hurricane force.

There are a few things southern Californians can try to counteract the negative effects caused by the positive ions in the Santa Ana winds. First, slather on a heavy duty moisturizer, body lotion and lip balm. Rehydrate yourself with plenty of water or juice. Protect your skin from the dust with long sleeves, and a hat or scarf will keep your hair from flying into tangles. Natural fiber clothing will help reduce static electricity. Use anti static dryer sheets in the laundry and try a static guard spray on the couch and other fabrics. Indoors, use water to help produce negative ions with a small desk fountain, an aquarium, bowls of water, or a humidifier. Or try a commercial negative ion generator and static guard. The lava tubes are large and you are going to walk through them. The best and most jaw dropping is the Catacombs Cave. The tube is about 7,000 feet long and just awe inspiring. You should also have a go at the Hopkins Chocolate and Blue Grotto caves. Bring a sweater and get ready for a memorable experience.

Moving to the coast, we come to the Redwood National Park. Again, a personal favorite. There are numerous excellent hiking areas, but we are here to see big trees. The aptly named Tall Trees Grove is the place we want. In classic hiking terms, the route is only 3 miles roundtrip and should take an hour and a half. Hah! This is the place of many of the tallest trees in the world, many topping out over 300 feet. The trees are so large, the base can be as much as fifteen feet across. That is probably wider then the room you are sitting in now. With such heights, you are going to be looking up a lot and walking very slowly. Count on turning this hike into a three hour event at a minimum.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is located to the east of Redding. As you might have guessed from the name, the park has a history of volcanic activity, eruptions and lots of geothermal activity. Any of the hiking routes in the park will pass muster, but I am a sucker for volcanoes. Prior to Mount St. Helens hogging the limelight, Lassen Peak was the last volcano to erupt in the United States. Okay, it was 1914, but it still counts. More importantly, you can hike it! It is 5 miles roundtrip and takes two or three hours. Unfortunately, you have to hit it between July and September because it is closed the rest of the time. As an aside, you can also try the Bumpass Hell hike. I know nothing about it, but the name makes it worth a go if nothing else.

Hiking in the forgotten north of California offers you, me and everyone an opportunity to see part of the state that most people dont realize exists. Whether you want to hike down a lava shoot, stare up at giant trees or climb a volcano, you can do it all here.

The beach city of Redondo Beach, California is situated in Los Angeles County approximately eighteen (18) miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and ten (10) miles northwest of Long Beach.

Redondo Beach is a family oriented community and is a good safe place to take the family for a day trip or for a vacation. There is plenty to do for everyone. Go sportfishing at Redondo Sportfishing and fish for Barracuda, Bonito, Yellowtail, Halibut, Kelp Bass, White Sea Bass, and many other species.

California has a long and rich history of wine making. The wine industry marked its beginning in 1769, when the first grape vines were planted at Mission San Diego, by the Franciscan missionary Father Junipero Serra. This black-skinned grape variety, which was called Mission grape, played a significant role in California wine production until 1880.

In 1833, the first documented imported European wine vine of California was planted in Los Angeles by a French winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes. Later in the 1850s and '60s, Agoston Harazsthy - a Hungarian soldier and merchant - imported original vine cuttings from around 165 European vineyards. Altogether, he introduced 300 different grape varietals in California.

Harazsthy made the most outstanding contribution to the development of the wine industry, which made him known as the founder of California Wine Industry. He founded the Buena Vista Winery, which can still be seen at Sonoma. Great efforts were made in promoting vine planting throughout North California. Moreover, he introduced the idea of non-irrigated vineyards and also constructed many caves for wine cellaring.

During the 1890s, most of the European vines were destroyed due to the attack of

Phylloxera - a destructive root louse. The attempts taken to eradicate the pest were mostly unsuccessful. Finally, Thomas V. Munson - who was regarded as the father of Texas viticulture - fostered the idea of grafting European wine vines onto American rootstocks.

California wine industry faced a major decline due to National Prohibition (1920 - 1933). The major portion of the industry, which initially had up to 713 bonded wineries, was wiped out during the prohibition. By the end of 1933, California wine industry managed to revive gradually. The common grape varieties of the time were Thompson seedless, Emperor, and Flame Tokay.

Today, the California wine industry is one among the finest in the world. It contributes to around 90% of total U.S. wine production. The industry boasts approximately 2,445 wineries, which produce more than 500 million gallons of wines every year. Chardonnay is the largest grown variety, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and White Zinfandel.

On the face of it, Venice Beach, California is a nothing but a three-mile long sandy beach. However, it is known to the world as the roller skating capital, as well as rich cultural history that includes a tradition of music, Beatnick poetry, and good times. Tourism is now alive and well in Venice Beach, California. It has an array of activities to offer. During the entire summer season and on the weekends, one can find every intersection of the city laced with a gamut of street entertainment artists like musicians, singers, jugglers, acrobats, mimes, comics, magicians, prophets, fortune tellers, and other assorted entertainers.

Tourists should not be enticed by visions of a balmy summer in this town. Vail receives an average of 300 days of sunshine a year with little-to-no humidity. The weather can change in a matter of hours, so it is a good idea to be prepared with extra layering when heading outdoors. Near the onset of summer, the weather can be very deceptive; temperatures at ground level can drop to freezing at night. During the summer, the average daytime temperature is an enjoyable 75 degrees, while the average evening temperature is a cool 45 degrees. The daytime highs in the hottest month, July, hit the low 70s, with lows still touching the high 30s.
